Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Throughout history, the LGBTQ+ community has faced severe persecution and torment based off their sexual orientation. However, over time society and many countries have been more open to accepting those in the LGBTQ+ community with no persecution. Despite this, there are many others that continue to persecute the LGBTQ+ community such as the Ugandan government. Uganda, a country in East Africa, recently passed their Anti-Homosexuality Bill in late March 2023.

This piece of legislation aims to eradicate LGBTQ+ people from any form of social engagement in Uganda. This bill has a punishment of life imprisonment for same-sex conduct, while also increasing the prison sentence up to 10 years for an attempt at same-sex conduct. However, this bill also takes this to another degree as in some cases, the death penalty may be called. These cases include “serial offenders”or for anyone having same-sex relations with a person with a disability, thereby automatically denying persons with disabilities the capacity to consent to sex. Additionally, this bill outlaws the promotion of homosexuality or the LGBTQ+ community at all, making a society of complete censorship of the LGBTQ+. To further this persecution,  anyone advocating for the rights of LGBT people, or providing financial support to organizations that do so, could face up to 20 years of imprisonment. In addition, anyone who advertises, publishes, prints, broadcasts, distributes material, including digitally, that is regarded as promoting or encouraging homosexuality would face criminal sanction. On top of all of this, the bill also criminalizes any person who fails to report someone they suspect of participating in same-sex acts to the police, calling for a fine or imprisonment for six months. Effectively, any supportive friends or family anyone a part of the LGBTQ+ could be imprisoned if they don’t report their loved ones to the authorities. Additionally, if anyone conducts a same-sex marriage ceremony, they could be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Overall, this new Ugandan bill projects intense persecution to those a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The social injustice is is clearly illustrated in this bill through the lack of equality to those a part of the LGBTQ+ community along with the intense punishments one may face. Although around the world many people have been accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, there are many others that feel so strongly opposed towards them and will do anything to prevent them from peacefully living.
