Jan 6 Capitol Hill Riot and Relevance Now

3 years ago, the January 6 Capitol Hill riot occurred and it still has relevance to today’s current events.

On January 6, 2021, when a violent mob stormed the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C., disrupting the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. The riot resulted in extensive damage to the Capitol building, multiple injuries, and several deaths.Controversies surrounding former President Donald Trump arose due to his rhetoric leading up to the riot, including claims of widespread voter fraud and encouragement of his supporters to “fight” to overturn the election results. Critics argue that Trump’s remarks fueled the anger and sense of grievance among his supporters, ultimately contributing to the violent actions that occurred on January 6. Moreover, Trump’s response to the riot, initially characterized by a delayed and equivocal condemnation, drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Some accused him of failing to promptly and unequivocally denounce the violence and urge his supporters to stand down. The events of January 6 and the subsequent controversies have led to widespread debate over issues such as political polarization, the spread of misinformation, the role of social media in fomenting unrest, and the preservation of democratic norms and institutions.

With this controversy, and Trump seeking re-election, with the Republican nominee looking in his favor, many question whether he is fit for office. Many conversations are happening on both sides of political beliefs, questioning whether Trump should even be considered eligible. Some states have taken measures such as removing him off the ballot (check this past blog to read more about it), as they have found Trump not fit for candidacy.

The January 6 riot returning as a major controversial issue demonstrates its continued relevance, and how with unanswered questions, tensions continue. If Trump wins or loses this election (assuming he gets the Republican nominee, as it is strongly in his favor), there are many possible implications that both sides fear. First, is that it is possible another riot could occur from supporters claiming voter fraud. Secondly, another one is that people may feel that the 14th amendment provisions (about disqualification due to insurrection or rebellion) are no longer considered valid and will always be let go.

This upcoming November is an important election, for all sides, and there are many controversies and tensions that surround it.
