Iowa Elementary School Shooting

Gun violence is increasingly becoming problematic in United States society. It feels that almost every other blog that is written on this page is about a form of gun violence. The use of firearms, once primarily confined to military contexts, has expanded to include hate crimes and general violence in contemporary society. While guns still hold significance in military operations, their prevalence in civilian hands has led to their involvement in a wider range of societal issues. This shift reflects advancements in technology, increased accessibility, and evolving cultural attitudes.

Just recently, a 17-year-old man, a student at the very same school, went and shot up a local high school in Perry, Iowa, resulting in a death, 5 wounded, and many traumatized permanently. He then proceeded to end his own life after this incident. In this small town,  this shooting had a grand impact. For many nights after the shooting, the community came together and devoted these nights to candlelight vigils of everyone involved in the incident.

These shootings are happening so consistently that it seems they aren’t as highlighted in the news anymore. However, it is still extremely important to recognize each and every incident, so we can hope to progress with less death. School shootings shed light on the broader issue of gun violence, prompting the need for comprehensive solutions. Regardless of one’s stance on gun control, enhancing security measures in schools is vital for preventing such tragedies. This may involve increased security personnel, surveillance systems, and mental health support. Ensuring the safety of students and staff should be a priority, requiring a multifaceted approach that combines gun policy with proactive security measures and support systems.
