Russia’s New Drone Attack

The Russia-Ukraine war has exacerbated over the past year and a half since when the war first started on February 2022. Almost 9000 people have died and over 15000 are injured. Although the war has been consistently getting worse, recently, Russia launched the largest drone attack since the beginning of the war. Russia launched this drone attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. These drone strikes were a part of Russia’s broader campaign of shelling and artillery attacks against targets in 12 regions across Ukraine. Russia deployed 54 drones against infrastructure and military objects in Ukraine but Ukraine shot down 52 of them. These drones came in several waves, making it quite challenging to attempt to shoot all of them down. Of those shot down, lots of debris came down and caused damage in several parts of Kyiv. Many emergency workers had to rush to combat blazes at high-rise apartment blocks struck by falling drones and debris. Russia plans to continue to launch many drone attacks to damage Ukraine infrastructure and military.

To battle this, Kyiv has been pushing its Western allies for extra weapon supplies to help combat Russia’s campaigns. Kyiv desires F-16 jet fighter planes the most as they could then go “toe-toe” with Russia’s air attacks. A public policy approach to these conflicts is that international allies could support Ukraine by providing them the supplies they desire and need. Other countries could also provide Ukraine with medical support to alleviate the amount of people dying and being injured.

Obama-Era Mercury Rules

On Friday February 17, 2023, The Biden administration finalized a decision to reestablish Obama-era rules that requires coal and oil-fired power plants to reduce toxic pollutants. Many of which including mercury and acid gas, that come out of their smokestacks. These rules have been extremely effective in the past and since Obama’s presidency in 2012 when these rules were passed, it is estimated that mercury emissions from power plants were brought down by 86% by 2017, while acid gas emissions were reduced by 96%. This major decrease is quite beneficial towards mitigating Global Warming through reducing the amount of emissions released into the atmosphere, which are the number one contributor towards Global Warming and climate change’s rise. These rules were helpful towards mitigating Global Warming but when Donald Trump became president, he withdrew the legal justification for an Obama-era rules and said that the cost of compliance far outweighed the public health benefits. Although he may believe this which eventually led to the cancelation of the Obama-Era Mercury rules, it was seen that these rules had extremely high benefits. So, during this time of cancelation, Global Warming continued to increase and exacerbate. However, Biden’s administration recently re-implemented these rules, therefore forcing coal-fired power plants to cut their mercury emissions and thus help Global Warming and climate change.

Ralph Yarl Shooting

Ralph Yarl, a 16 year old black teenager, was shot on April 13, 2023 when he accidentally went to the wrong house in Kansas City, Missouri. He was hospitalized after being shot twice, in his head and the arm.

Yarl went to Andrew Lester’s (an 84 year old white man) house on accident as he was trying to pick up his younger siblings from their friends house. Upon opening the interior of the door and seeing a black male, two seconds later, Lester immediately fired two shots. Fortunately, Yarl has survived and is recovering well. Lester claimed that he was “scared for his life.” However, after this shooting, Lester was charged of two felonies in which he pled not guilty.

Events like this one represent serious issues in society and the United States, gun violence and social inequality. Shootings are becoming more and more common across the United States with more than 100 shooting in just the year of 2023. Many southern states such as Missouri allow easy access to guns which in turn lead to high prevalence of gun violence in these areas. Social inequality is also represented from events like this as there is still an integrated racism in society. Lester felt scared for his life immediately only after seeing a black male. This poses many questions of how would this situation differ if it were a while male or if there were stricter gun laws, etc.

To prevent events like this from occurring again, legislation could be passed with stricter gun laws to prevent the prevalence of guns. As more guns are created and sold, this allows guns to get in the hands of many people that can use it for the wrong purposes. If stricter legislation was passed, this could therefore prevent any serious gun violence.

Israel Attacks on Syria

Throughout history there has been a lot of conflict between Israel and Syria. This originates from their hostile conditions of Syria never recognizing Israel as a legitimate state and does not accept Israeli passports as legally valid for entry into Syrian territory. Likewise, Israel regards Syria as a hostile state and generally prohibits its citizens from traveling there. More recently though, these conflicts have been escalated. In the past year alone, Israel has attacked Syria nearly 20 times and have killed at least 44 people and left more than 50 wounded. Israel is targeting positions not just belonging to the Syrian government but Iranian forces as well. In this month of April, 2023, there has been 4 attacks.

April 2, 2023- Israel launched air raids that left 5 wounded in the Homs province in Syria. However, Syrian air defenses intercepted some of the missiles.

April 4, 2023- Israel launches another air raid but on the capital Damascus that results in two killed civilians. There were many damages to the area as well.

April 8, 2023- More attacks with blasts heard from Masyaf city in Syria’s western Hama province. This attack was in the purpose of targeting an Iranian presence in this city.

April 9, 2023- This attack has a different side with Israel acting in response to Syria fired six rockets towards northern Israel. Although there were no casualties or damage caused, Israel military retaliated with artillery fire and fighter jets attacking Syrian army sites.

In response to these conflicts, some public policy responses could be used to approach. For example, to aid either Syria from these Israeli attacks, other countries could provide foreign aid and support. This could go directly into supporting Syria and help prevent any further deaths. However, there are many complications with this approach. First, a major global alliance known as NATO does not have Syria as a member, but they have Israel. This indicates that these many countries apart of NATO cannot help Syria as Israel is a part of their alliance.

Overall, these conflicts in Israel and Syria have been long term but have escalated recently with Israel launching numerous attacks. Public policy approaches could be helpful towards supporting Syria, but it is hard to tell on what is the best possible action.

Franklin Sechriest Burns Synagogue

On Friday, April 7th, 2023, Texan man Franklin Sechriest  pleaded guilty to a hate crime and arson in connection with a fire he set at the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 31, 2021 (he was 19 at the time). A synagogue is a Jewish house of worship in which Sechriest purposefully targeted this group. According to his journals, Sechriest went there to “scout out a target,” in which he admitted that  he targeted the synagogue because of his hatred of Jews. Sechriest’s journals were filled with vulgar antisemitic statements and views. Additionally, Sechriest had many decals and stickers with antisemitic representations. On the night of the arson, Sechriest drove to the synagogue and was seen on surveillance video with a 5-gallon container and toilet paper. Instantly, many cameras captured the glow of a fire from the direction of the sanctuary. This crime demonstrates the social unjust in United States society through the continuation of many hate crimes. These crimes are believed upon society to “devastate and terrorize communities.” In hope of preventing hate crimes like this from happening, there are some policy based approaches that could be helpful. First, hate crime laws could be strengthened to protect targeted groups by defining hate crimes, and increasing penalties for hate crimes. Additionally, the government can work to identify the root cause of these hate crimes. This could be a variety of things such as social and economic inequality, discrimination, lack of access to education and opportunities, etc. Policy measures could be enacted to battle each of these to hope to prevent such a crime from occurring again. Although it is hard to fully prevent any hate crime from ever happening again, policy actions such as these ones could somewhat contribute to this cause. Overall, this hate crime led by Sechriest of setting a synagogue on fire is a clear example of the continued social unjust in United States society. Policy measures through the government are necessary to help prevent further hate crimes.

Texas Abortion Pill Ruling

Recently, a judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of Texas said that the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) made a series of legal errors in approving the abortion pill, mifepristone, for sale. He has delayed the impact of his decision for a week while President Biden’s administration appeals. However, if this ruling goes into effect, it could block sales across the country of the abortion pill. This pill is the most common method for ending a pregnancy as due to the overturned Roe vs Wade case last year, the Supreme Court withdrew constitutional protections for an abortion. With the overturning of this case, clinics have stopped offering abortion in about a third of all of the states. Access to abortion medication has become extremely challenging. Some states have banned the prescription of abortion pills and have imposed many other restrictions. Even with this already tight control on abortion, this new ruling that started from Kacsmaryk will lead to a national suspension of abortion-pill sales. This would impact states where the procedure has remained widely available since the overturned Roe vs Wade such as New York, California and Colorado the most by tightening the access to abortion intensely. Overall, this possible ruling will further the complications in todays day and age of accessing an abortion. There is already intense control through the overturned Roe vs Wade, but more can possibly come. This case will be handled by the Supreme Court leaving the future to be unpredicted.

Evan Gershkovich “Espionage” Arrest

To think that all Cold War spying efforts were over is something that President Vladmir Putin of Russia could never believe. Evan Gershkovich, a 31 year old American journalist and reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was recently arrested on March 29, 2023 by the FSB (Russian successor to the Soviet KGB) on a charge of espionage, the practice of spying, with no real evidence. Espionage is a serious crime and in Russia can lead to an imprisonment of up to 20 years. Gershkovich becomes the first American journalist to be arrested on this charge since the Cold War.

Gershkovich moved to Moscow in October 2017 and for the past almost 6 years, he has been living peacefully working for various news outlets and in January 2022, he started working for the Wall Street Journal. He was arrested while on his reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, he was simply just doing his job. He is currently being held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison with little to none access to the outside world. This arrest represents an assault on freedom of press.

Due to this false charged arrest, the United States Senate’s Democratic and Republican leaders called for Russia to free Gershkovich. President Joe Biden and other senior officials in the administration have also been heavily pushing and calling for Gershkovich’s release.

In further response to this, there are some policy-based approaches that could be made. For example, the United States could use diplomatic pressure or international legal action. For diplomatic pressure, the US could include public statements, private meetings, and other forms of communication to pressure the Russian government. For the international legal action, the US government could work with other international organizations such as the United Nations to bring legal action to the Russian government for violating international laws related to freedom of the press and human rights.

Overall, this false charged arrest of Evan Gershkovich is a big topic in current events through him being falsely charged with espionage and the representation of the assault on the freedom of press. Although there are some policy responses being made currently with President Biden calling Russia for his release, there are some others that could be taken into account that could be helpful as well.

Kochi Toxic Fumes

The people of Kochi, a city in Kerala, a state in southwestern India, have recently been facing challenges in their city due to many toxic fumes. After the towering Brahmapuram landfill, one of India’s trash mountains, caught on fire, many dangerous heat and methane emissions were released. This fire had to be put out with the help of the Indian Navy and Air Force, representing the severity of the fire through the need for their involvement. Although they helped, many toxic fumes were released of thick plumes of toxic smoke rising high into the sky, forcing the air quality to completely plummet. A thick cloud of smoke and methane gas covered the area, reducing visibility along with the air quality. This event directly contribute to India’s growing climate challenges.

Not only does this severely impact climate change by heavily contributing towards it, the people are in danger and first hand face these challenges of toxic fumes and smoke. Due to the severity of the toxic fumes, local administration has advised locals to remain indoors and use N-95 masks when they step out. Additionally, schools were all temporary shut down to ensure safety from the pollution.

The main reason as to why this landfill caught on fire is to believed to be the failure of official machinery. So, to ensure this will not happen again and the safety of the people, local responses are necessary. Local officials should redesign and enhance the qualities of the machines to ensure its quality to be maximally effective. If there is a continuation of the lack of proper machinery, there is a lack of certainty on whether the people are safe or if this could ever happen again. Events like this are bound to happen in Kochi or other areas if it is not acted upon.

Overall, the Brahmapuram landfill catching on fire due to the failure of official machinery poses severe problems to the world. Lots of pollution has come forth, impacting climate change. Additionally, many people face severe challenges in their every day life. It is important for policy based responses towards events like this to ensure the safety for the future of the population.

Trump Indictment

Former President Donald Trump was charged in an indictment with 34 felony counts of falsification of business records in the first degree on March 30, 2023. Trump became the first president ever to be indicted on criminal charges. He pleads not guilty to all these accusations. These charges are the culmination of an investigation of many “hush money” payments that Trump paid before the 2016 election to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged affair. He wrote these “hush money” payments as business expenses, falsifying the money books. Overall, Trump is facing severe accusations based on previous actions and it is still to be determined on whether he will be convicted of his crimes.

Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Throughout history, the LGBTQ+ community has faced severe persecution and torment based off their sexual orientation. However, over time society and many countries have been more open to accepting those in the LGBTQ+ community with no persecution. Despite this, there are many others that continue to persecute the LGBTQ+ community such as the Ugandan government. Uganda, a country in East Africa, recently passed their Anti-Homosexuality Bill in late March 2023.

This piece of legislation aims to eradicate LGBTQ+ people from any form of social engagement in Uganda. This bill has a punishment of life imprisonment for same-sex conduct, while also increasing the prison sentence up to 10 years for an attempt at same-sex conduct. However, this bill also takes this to another degree as in some cases, the death penalty may be called. These cases include “serial offenders”or for anyone having same-sex relations with a person with a disability, thereby automatically denying persons with disabilities the capacity to consent to sex. Additionally, this bill outlaws the promotion of homosexuality or the LGBTQ+ community at all, making a society of complete censorship of the LGBTQ+. To further this persecution,  anyone advocating for the rights of LGBT people, or providing financial support to organizations that do so, could face up to 20 years of imprisonment. In addition, anyone who advertises, publishes, prints, broadcasts, distributes material, including digitally, that is regarded as promoting or encouraging homosexuality would face criminal sanction. On top of all of this, the bill also criminalizes any person who fails to report someone they suspect of participating in same-sex acts to the police, calling for a fine or imprisonment for six months. Effectively, any supportive friends or family anyone a part of the LGBTQ+ could be imprisoned if they don’t report their loved ones to the authorities. Additionally, if anyone conducts a same-sex marriage ceremony, they could be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Overall, this new Ugandan bill projects intense persecution to those a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The social injustice is is clearly illustrated in this bill through the lack of equality to those a part of the LGBTQ+ community along with the intense punishments one may face. Although around the world many people have been accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, there are many others that feel so strongly opposed towards them and will do anything to prevent them from peacefully living.
