When we think about social justice issues, we as society generally immediately think about the minority groups that may be considered “targeted” in society. These “targeted” minority groups include many different groups of people but through recent times, it is mainly the LGBTQ+ and people of color. However, we must consider that social justice issues can happen to everyone, even people who may be considered the “majority.”
This is seen in a recent shooting at a Christian school in Nashville Tennessee on March 27,2023. The shooter was identified as a Audrey Hale, a transgender person who had a detailed manifesto to attack the Christian academy. Hale was a former student to this school, and it is believed that some resentment developed from childhood built up towards this school and led to this event. Hale shot their way through the building with two assault rifles and a handgun. In the process of open fire, Hale killed Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney (all age 9) as well as custodian Mike Hill and substitute teacher Cynthia Peak (both 61) and school head Katherine Koonce (60). Following the shootings, Hale was killed when they encountered officers on the second floor by 10:27 a.m., 14 minutes after the alarm was raised.
After the event, police searched Hale’s home and found more guns, a detailed map of the school, and a manifesto of the attack. It was reported that at the house, Hale also had plans to go to other Christian schools as well, demonstrating the strong resent towards these schools.
This is a tragic event that demonstrates that social justice issues can happen to anyone, and it is important to consider and commemorate those that were lost in these unfortunate events.
